Tabucchi met with great success, both at home and abroad, with his novel Sostiene
Pereira, for which he received two awards, the Premio Viareggio and Premio
Campiello; the film bearing the same title, directed by Roberto Faenza and
starring Marcello Mastroianni, was immediately released.

Three significant books published this year are: L'ultima lacrima by
Stefano Benni; In alto a sinistra by Erri De Luca; Imperium by
the Polish writer Ryszard Kapuscinski. New authors published this year
included: the young writer Silvia Ballestra, Ermanno Cavazzoni, Enrico
Franceschini and Paolo Di Stefano.
The following joined the editorial staff: Patrizia Nanz, as non-fiction
editor, Alessandra Mascaretti and Maddalena Ceretti.
